Niigata Donburi

Niigata Encyclopedia

Niigata Donburi (jp.) is from the prefecture Niigata and carries characteristics of take-home bowls, take-home bentos, and has size variations depending on the store. Dishes that have gone across many prefectures are in their own classifications and have their own regional distinctions that are within the prefecture and by store in a particular area. According to the All Japan Donburi Union 全日本どんぶり連合会 classifies different rice bowls such as: Gyudon (Beef), Oyakodon (Chicken), Katsudon (Pork), Unadon (Eel), Tendon (Fried), Kakiagedon (Vegetable Fried), Tsukedon (Marinated Sashimi), Kaisendon (Seafood), Stirfried Don, as the unignorable standards of donburi. While these standards are the National standard of around  ten-variations the Prefectural goals could be to have an equal identity of around ten-variations of their own like: Tarekatsudon (Pork).

Promotion of Donburi that has a sense of Niigataness has been of interest of the Niigata Government as it is a rice producing region that is looking for new ways to get people interested in the prefecture. Having less-known stores that are making contrasting ideas that are seen as experimental donburi, weird donburi, and/or contrasting donburi are essential in making donburi that are unique to the areas and help revival projects relating to food. Attention was brought to the prefecture as people noticed more and more the Tarekatsudon and Niigata Kaisendon that have been popular to returnees to the region when they come back to visit their families.

Donburi Campaign, Minamiuonuma City, Niigata Prefecture had a Maji Don Campaign that really had people asking themselves what's a real donburi or a serious donburi that added people's interest in Niigata Donburi. Because of this campaign it has been a place of Niigata Donburi innovation and the area most known for its donburi. Many of the donburi that have people thinking about Niigata have originated through its promotional campaign for regional revitalization such as the: (1) Itariadon.
