Cool Niigata is a term that continues to evolve while it is based on making a perception of a cooler place to be. The term is often reversed as it historically started out as part of Cool Niigata with anonymous place of discussion referred to the term “Cool Niigata” of what needs to be done to create a delicate balance of doing something that shows that the prefecture is going its own way, but on the line of what’s socially acceptable to innovate and create things to make a social perception of cool rather than the government variation. Those who criticize the government direction on the tax-budget and its short comings to produce tangible differences refer to the government initiative as the “Cool Niigata Fund” that is an offshoot of Cool Japan.

Niigata Cool

Cool Niigata was coined by the government to refer to the aspects of Niigata culture that domestic Japanese through the “Cool Niigata Declaration” to spread the word of Niigata Coolness. It was also implemented to draw non-Japanese people to perceive as “cool” and create a national and international brand strategy aiming to disseminate Niigata’s attractiveness and allure. 

This encompasses contemporary culture, traditional culture, music, games, manga, anime, fashion, cuisine, eco-technology, commercial products.  Programs that work with the government on making a better reported Niigata are BSN, NST, and UX, that focus on the charms of Niigata.

Japan Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry

Cool Japan is an initiative set forward by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) for tangible results of Japanese culture being exported into foreign countries. Part of its budget had been used for the awareness of domestic awareness and marketing domestic Japanese Niigata stuff to the domestic Japanese audience in Japan with the Cool Japan Expo In Niigata the count in 2022 was 16,540 people in attendance as it was held in Yamakido, Higashi-ku, Niigata City, Niigata Prefecture. Niigata's charms such as delicious sake, gourmet food, culture, tourism, fashion, traditional crafts, yuracharas, vtubers, and other entertainment would be present. For example a few at the live stage were: Eri Ogawa (Music), NGT48 (Niigata 48), and Hinata & Rafvery (Music). On the ground floor there was Tsubame-Sanjo Factories, World Nishikoi Summit group, Sake Distilleries, and many others. The Cool Japan Expo in Niigata’s Executive Committee consisted of: Shuta Shibuya (Niigata Venture Association), Ayumu Eguchi (Namara), Kato, and others.
